Throggs Neck, NY – Moments before the first snowflakes began to hit the ground, the Privateer swim team held a meet against the Panthers of Old Westbury. The meet was originally schedule as a tri-meet, however due to concerns with the weather and traveling, Saint Joseph’s-Patchogue pulled out prior to the weekend. However, it was definitely worth the time for Maritime as they defeated Old Westbury in both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The Men’s squad took down the Panthers by a score of 75-35 with one Maritime member finishing first in all the races on the day. Sophomore Joseph Stredny (Harvey’s Lake, PA/Dallas) had an awesome day, he picked up first place in the 100 Free (50.98), and then was a key element to both the first place finishing 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams.  The win is the second of the year by the Privateers and their second in a row after they defeated Baruch College earlier in the week.

Frsehman Kelly Fitzpatrick (Annapolis, MD/Mount de Sales) (Annapolis, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) picked up two wins in the women’s competition, the 200 Free (3:04.60) and the 100 Free (1:19.58). Junior Cheryl Driscoll (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos) (Los Alamos, NM/Los Alamos) came only 18 tenths of a second shy of taking first in the 100 breast. The Privateers also held their own in both relay events, only losing by a short margin.

The men’s team will look to extend their winning streak to three on Saturday 1/29 when they travel to Hoboken, NJ to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in a men’s only meet. The women then return to action alongside the men’s team when they host Mount Saint Mary College on February 2nd.
